PM2.5 Monitoring Information
Background
On July 18, 1997, in accordance with the Clean Air Act, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued revised national ambient air
quality standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter (PM). The
decision to revise the NAAQS for particulate matter reflected
current understanding of the serious effects of this pollutant on
public health. As a part of this action, EPA added new NAAQS for very
small particles known as PM2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic
diameter less than or equal to 2.5 micrometers). For more information about the PM2.5 standard, see EPA's website.
