FREIGHT Fact
Freight Ton-Mile Trends by Mode

The U.S. total domestic freight ton-miles in 1980 were 3.4 trillion ton-miles; by 2004, that number had grown to 4.5 trillion ton-miles. The growth occurred in three major modes – air, truck, and railroad. Air freight ton-miles grew to 3.5 times that of 1980 air freight, despite the sharp decline in 2001 and 2002. Truck freight ton-miles grew over 2 times the 1980 level. Water is the only mode that showed a decline in ton-miles since 1980.

SmartWay Transport: A voluntary program between EPA and the freight industry that will increase the energy efficiency while significantly reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases.  The SmartWay Transport Partnership is a voluntary collaboration between EPA and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.SmartWay Transport Partners lead the way towards a cleaner, more efficient transportation future by adopting fuel-saving strategies that increase profits and reduce emissions -- a "win-win" opportunity for all.

Class 1 Freight Railroads join EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership.
These new Partners transport more than 90 percent of all domestic rail freight. Each railroad has committed to evaluate the environmental impacts of its operations and work jointly with EPA to develop and implement a plan to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions over the next several years. These railroads were recognized for their commitment to environmental improvement by EPA Assistant Administrator Jeffrey Holmstead at the Association of American Railroads' John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Awards Ceremony on May 25, 2005.

EPA plans to develop model idling law
At the request of states and trucking companies, SmartWay is initiating an effort to develop a model state (or local) idling law. The model could be used by states or counties that wish to bring more consistency to the patchwork of existing laws surrounding bus and truck idling.

This program provides support purchase and installation of  Auxiliary Power Units (APUs)

Note that applications have been closed out for this calendar year (2005) since Pennsylvania reached the $250,000 ceiling for APU projects, but a new round will open on

Verified Technology List

EPA List
This table summarizes all the diesel retrofit technologies that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved for use in engine retrofit programs. The table shows the percent reduction (of verified or tested levels) that EPA will recognize for emission reductions for each technology.

See EPA's retrofit manufacturers contact page for more information on these manufacturers
